Stairs down from footpath are unsafe

Reported via mobile in the Slabs - Uneven / Damaged / Cracked category anonymously at 10:39, Thu 17 October 2024

Sent to North Northamptonshire Council less than a minute later. ref: 6626378.

(The Stairs Outside Leopard House on lower street, I live opposite at White Gables) Handrails both sides coming out, very wobbly, not safe to hold onto, the posts are rotten also. Stairs have ivy growth, mud, leaves covering them, we clear them but it doesn’t help, the ivy and hedge need cutting back properly. Hedge either side is too thick to see if it’s safe to cross. Suggest: replace handrail, not just concrete top (like before) that’s not worked, please replace the rails fully, you’ll need to remove concrete, possible cut brick, place new wood/metal posts, then concrete in. Cut back hedge width so can see both ways at bottom step, so you know if it’s safe to cross, at the moment you have to step into the road to see if it’s clear, bc of the hedge, which isn’t safe, cars go 40mph+ up/down the road and don’t know there are stairs/people there. Then clear all obstructions on steps themselves and make good any damage you find under all that - steps may be broken or uneven hard to tell. I would also request a ‘pedestrian crossing’ sign be added so that cars know people cross there, it MAY help with their awareness of the crossing m, currently it’s hidden.
